Chatri Sityodtong, Chairman and CEO of ONE Championship, stated: “ONE Championship is back in Manila, and it’s always a pleasure to visit the Philippines. We’re here to celebrate Asia’s greatest cultural treasure -- martial arts. We’re not here to sell fights, we’re here to build martial arts heroes who ignite the world with strength, hope, dreams, and inspiration. By telling their stories, we share the true values of martial arts with the world, which will always be our mission. See you all this Friday night for ONE: ROOTS OF HONOR. It’s going to be a fantastic show.”

Martin Nguyen, ONE Featherweight World Champion, stated: “It’s my fourth time competing here in Manila, and I’ve always felt at home here. It’s an honor to share my talent with you all. Thank you to all the fans for the support. Challenging the legend Jadambaa himself, it’s such an honor. I would like to thank ONE Championship for placing their trust in me. I’ll bring a hundred percent into the cage, and god willing, I’ll walk out of the arena still champion.”

Narantungalag Jadambaa, ONE World Title Challenger, stated: “First of all, I would like to thank ONE Championship for the opportunity to compete for the ONE World Title once again. This is not about age, this is about passion. Martial arts is my life and I hold the utmost respect for anyone who has the courage to step inside that cage. I will bring even more courage into the cage this Friday. I respect Martin Nguyen for what he has done for our sport and it is an honor to face him. I will do my best and the best man will walk out of the cage with the title.”

Yosuke Saruta, ONE Strawweight World Champion, stated: “Coming to the Philippines and representing Japan and the Japanese culture, it is such a huge honor for me. I know Joshua Pacio has a lot of fans here, and I respect him as a martial artist. All I can say is that we will both bring our best into the cage this Friday night. It’s going to be an exciting fight, and I plan on getting my hand raised in the end as the victor. Thank you all for having me.”

Joshua Pacio, ONE World Title Challenger, stated: “I would like to thank ONE Championship for giving me another chance to fight for the title. I know the magnitude of this matchup and how important this rematch with Yosuke Saruta is. I wasn’t at my best in that first fight, so I want to go out there and prove that I can do much better. He’s a great fighter, and I have so much respect for him. But I have the hopes and dreams of an entire country on my shoulders, and I can’t let the fans down. I’m coming to regain the belt. It’s going to be a war this Friday.”

Martin Nguyen's Return And Saruta-Pacio Rematch Headline ONE: ROOTS OF HONOR

Martin Nguyen's Return And Saruta-Pacio Rematch Headline ONE: ROOTS OF HONOR

ONE Featherweight World Champion Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen is coming back, and he’s ready to defend his title in the main event of ONE: ROOTS OF HONOR on 12 April at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines. Nguyen will be facing former featherweight kingpin Narantungalag Jadambaa of Mongolia.

Nguyen took over the ONE world in 2017 when he captured a World Championship in both the lightweight and featherweight divisions. He scored exciting one-punch KO wins over Marat Gafarov and Eduard Folayang to earn the belts, and the Vietnamese-Australian martial artist was on top of the world. The year 2018 was a bit more challenging.

Nguyen attempted to drop down to bantamweight to challenge ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano Fernandes. He came up just short when he lost by split decision in March 2018. Nguyen would rebound with a split-decision victory over Christian Lee in a rematch in May 2018, but the Situ-Asian would lose his second bout of the year in July 2018 when he battled Kevin Belingon for the interim bantamweight title.

The quest for unprecedented greatness might have done a number of Nguyen’s body. He suffered an injury that sidelined him for the rest of the year, the entire first quarter of 2019 and forced him to relinquish the lightweight belt. Now that he is fully healthy and still the ONE Featherweight World Champion, he is ready to return to the cage and defend his title.

Jadambaa is a proven ONE veteran who has compiled a 14-5 record, and he’s been in the cage with the best featherweights in the promotion. In fact, Jadambaa has faced and lost to Gafurov twice by rear-naked choke. The first defeat took place in 2015 and the most recent was in 2016. Jadambaa was set to face Tetsuya Yamada in 2017, but the bout was canceled and the Mongolian wound up sitting out the entire year.

However, he did come back strong in 2018. Jadambaa competed twice in less than a month. He defeated Edward Kelly via second-round TKO on 23 June, and then came back on 13 July to defeat Kazuki Tokudome by decision.

Nguyen won’t be the only competitor potentially suffering from cage rust. Jadambaa will have been out of action for nine months when he steps in with Nguyen. It will be interesting to see if either man shows ill effects from their layoff.

In the co-main event, another ONE World Title will be on the line. Reigning champion Yosuke “The Ninja” Saruta will defend his ONE Strawweight World Title in a rematch with the Philippines’ own Joshua “The Passion” Pacio.

In the first meeting, Saruta stepped in as a late replacement for Hayato Suzuki, who had to bow out due to injury. Pacio seemed to be primed for the rematch with Suzuki after he’d lost to the Japanese veteran in their first bout. It’s possible Pacio took Saruta lightly. It’s also possible Saruta was just better on the night the two men initially clashed. Perhaps it was a combination of both.

In any case, Pacio and Saruta will have a rematch with Pacio having an opportunity to avenge the defeat and regain his title, or the current champion can prove the first win was no fluke.

Joshua Pacio: The Road to ONE: ROOTS OF HONOR

Joshua Pacio: The Road to ONE: ROOTS OF HONOR

At ONE: ROOTS OF HONOR on 12 April, Joshua "The Passion" Pacio will do his best to regain the ONE Strawweight World Title when he faces Japan’s Yosuke Saruta in a rematch.

This time, Pacio will be competing in front of his countrymen as the event will be held in the Philippines.

It's the co-main event that also features the return of ONE Featherweight World Champion Martin "The Situ-Asian" Nguyen.

Here is how Pacio got here.

Hayato Suzuki - August 2017 - ONE: KINGS AND CONQUERORS

The Japanese veteran has been a thorn in Pacio's side throughout his career. Pacio was just 21 years old when he locked horns with Suzuki in 2017 at ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS.

While physically talented and filled with a warrior's heart, Pacio lacked the seasoning and well-roundedness to take on such a challenge at that stage of his career. To put it plainly, he ran into a buzzsaw on that evening and lost via submission in a little over three minutes of the first round.

Clearly, Pacio learned a lot from this experience as he went on the best run of his career after the defeat.

Roy Doliguez - November 2017 - ONE: LEGENDS OF THE WORLD

The strong build for Pacio as a serious title contender might have begun with this memorable KO win over Doliguez. Less than a minute into the second round, Pacio fired the strike heard around the world. It was a dynamic spinning backfist that caught Doliguez flush and led to the KO victory for Pacio.

Coming off a disappointing and humbling loss at the hands of Suzuki, this was just what “The Passion” needed to regain momentum.

Ming Qian Lan - January 2018 - ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES

Could Pacio continue his run against Ming? You bet. Pacio's best quality is his submission skills and this match served as a reminder for anyone who might have forgotten.

It took just four minutes for Pacio to take Ming's back, sink in the choke and force the submission.

The victory was Pacio's second in a row, and the second time he'd forced an opponent to tap to a rear-naked choke. This win also took place as the co-main event on the card, which served as a sign of Pacio's ascension back up the ranks.

Pongsiri Mitsatit - July 2018 - ONE: REIGN OF KINGS

Six months later, Pacio was back on the preliminary card, but he didn't allow that to dampen his performance. He'd been previously scheduled to face Mitsatit rather than Ming in his last bout, but the match was canceled and ultimately rescheduled for this card. Pacio's submission game was again the star of the show.

Pacio used an inverted kimura to force the tap in this bout, a move he and his fans fondly referred to as “The Passion Lock”.

With each passing bout, Pacio was making himself more of a prolific finisher. This finish was his 11th in 12 professional wins. It also set him up for a title shot and a rematch against one of the two men who owned a victory over him.

Yoshitaka Naito - September 2018 - ONE: CONQUEST OF HEROES

More mature and balanced as a martial artist than he was the first time he faced Naito, Pacio was ready to capture the prize that had eluded him previously.

Back in October 2016 at ONE: STATE OF WARRIORS, prior to the loss to Suzuki, Pacio was submitted by another Japanese veteran in Naito.

In the rematch, Pacio's submission defense and striking were nearly aligned. He kept himself mostly out of precarious situations and earned a hard-fought unanimous-decision victory and his first world title.

In the process, Pacio also avenged one of his two pro losses. It seemed as if he had struggled against Japanese opponents, but perhaps this was the end of that problem. His next title defense was supposed to allow him to even the score with Suzuki, but things didn't work out as planned.

Yosuke Saruta - January 2019 - ONE: ETERNAL GLORY

Originally, Pacio was to face Suzuki in a rematch with the former's newly captured ONE Strawweight World Title on the line. Unfortunately, an injury knocked Suzuki out of action. He was replaced by another countryman, Saruta.

Quite frankly, Saruta wasn't given much of a chance to defeat Pacio, but this is why contests aren't conducted on paper.

The Japanese Shooto veteran with 29 professional bouts under his belt proved he did not come to the cage just to participate. Saruta came to win, and after the judges rendered a split decision in his favor, that's exactly what he did.

Prior to the match with Saruta, it seemed the only thing that could derail Pacio in his bout with the replacement opponent was overconfidence.

Perhaps that's what got to him in January, or maybe Saruta truly is just the better mixed martial artist. We'll find out for sure at ONE: ROOTS OF HONOR.

REMEMBER TO WATCH YOUR WEIGHT BY WATCHING YOUR HEALTH BY WATCHING I LOVE YOU, LC

There are at least three reasons why it's interesting to watch Aguila Production's I LOVE YOU, LC - co-directed by Dave Aguila and Dave Cecilio, who wrote the script - namely:

1.  WEIGHT - "There are more than 80 million Filipinos who are suffering from being overweight and obese. And this is not a petty matter because obesity is often the precursor of many chronic diseases, including cancer," explained Producer Dave Aguila.
