On Humanistic Buddhism And Cultural Pluaralism Conference This November 23-24,2012

         Over 30 international experts, scholars, artists, performers, and spiritual thinkers are coming to the First FGS Mabuhay Temple Conference on Humanistic Buddhism and Cultural Pluralism, brought to you by Fo Guang Shan (FGS) Mabuhay Temple, Buddha’s Light International Association Philippines (BLIA), in cooperation with Philosophy students of De La Salle University-Samahan ng Lasalyanong Pilosopo (DLSU Pilosopo).

    You can attend lectures and workshops, see art exhibits and performances, on the theme: “Pluralism in culture as a response to conflict, for the promotion of peace” from November 23-24, 2012 at the FGS Mabuhay Temple, Manila, Philippines. 

    The 2-day conference will feature plenary speeches from international scholars Dr. Racelle Weiman (Temple University, USA), Dr. Ruben Habito (Perkins School of Theology, USA), and Ven. Miao Jing (Abbess, FGS Mabuhay Temple). Throughout the 2-day conference, academic papers will be presented in parallel sessions by esteemed professors and scholars from Manila and Cebu, while specialized workshops will be conducted by experts on peace studies and inter-personal relationships. About 10 artists will exhibit their work (paintings, sculpture, photography, graphic design), and there will be performances from musicians and theater artists. The acclaimed documentary film “One Day on Earth” that captures a 24-hour period worldwide will be shown as part of the conference. The roster of presenters include scholars and artists from Fo Guang Shan monastic order, Buddha’s Light International Association, DLSU Pilosopo, De La Salle University Manila-Philosophy Department, Focolare Movement/Mariapolis Peace Tagayaty, Cebu Chu Un Temple, Peace and Conflict Journalism Network, University of San Carlos Cebu-Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Silliman University –Peace Studies Program, St. Scholastica’s College, Banaras Hindu University-Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies from India.

    Registration is open to the public. The conference will be a rich educational and cultural experience for both professors and students, especially in the fields of Buddhist and Eastern philosophy, ethics, aesthetics, socio-cultural studies, and other related fields. Even for those not in the academe, the conference is a venue for appreciating diversity and understanding various cultures, religions, and practices towards a harmonious and peaceful co-existence. Regular attendees of FGS Mabuhay Temple’s events will look forward to this conference as this year’s grand culmination of their favorite programs: the 2012 Buddhist Lecture Series, Dharma Cinema Circle and Open Mic Night.

Please pre-register online to reserve slots. The registration fee of P300 (discounted P150 if you can present a valid student ID) will be collected at the venue. The fee will entitle you lunch and dinner stubs for the 2-day conference, a souvenir program, and a Certificate of Participation. (Please take note that participants are encouraged to wear formal or semi-formal attire. Sleeveless shirts, shorts, miniskirts, slippers and other revealing clothing are not allowed. FGS Mabuhay Temple also does not allow smoking, bringing in of food with animal meat, alcoholic drinks, illegal substances, and firearms.)
