#Makidigma: MONIQUE WILSON is the NEW Mabining Mandirigma

Manila, Philippines – Tanghalang Pilipino continues to charge on with its crusade to provide its audience with productions that reflect the times and show love for our Inang Bayan (country), who is battling different kinds of political, social, cultural and environmental wars today. One of Tanghalang Pilipino’s highly acclaimed musical productions is such a play, and it gets even better now that it is on its fourth run with theater veteran Monique Wilson joins Mabining Mandirigma as the lead titular character.

Mabining Mandirigma, the musical about Apolinario Mabini’s life, was first staged in July 2015 and last staged in December 2016 and has already enjoyed three successful runs. Mabining Mandirigma was also the recipient of 12 Gawad Buhay Awards including Outstanding Musical award in the 8th Philstage Gawad Buhay in 2016. Mabining Mandirigma is helmed by CCP’s Vice President and Artistic Director Chris Millado as director, Joed Balsamo as composer, and multi-awarded Ejay Yatco joins as Musical Director.

This run is a tribute to the late fashion and costume designer James Reyes, who won Outstanding Costume Design in 2015. Young tenors Arman Ferrer and David Ezra alternately play Emilio Aguinaldo, while Hazel Maranan returns as an understudy to Monique Wilson.

This production serves as Tanghalang Pilipino’s 33rd Season opener and CCP 50th Anniversary offering, and will be staged from August 16 to September 1, 2019 at the CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater).

PROFOUND DUTY

Fresh from her directorial success of the highly acclaimed One Billion Rising, Monique Wilson goes back to her acting roots as she plays one of the most prolific Filipino heroes, Apolinario Mabini. Monique shares, “It is a fullfillment of a life's dream to be part of an innovative, dynamic, progressive, radically creative and deeply revolutionary musical. This excites me more than anything because we need artistic works like these in these politically and socially perilous times, more than ever before. I am hugely honored to be invited by Tanghalang Pilipino to play the role of Mabini, and to be working with the best and most radical creative artists in the country.”

With a season theme that calls us to fight, strive, and for national sovereignty, for equality, justice and human rights, for the preservation of our cultural heritage, and for the protection of children against exploitation, abuses and bigotry, Tanghalang Pilipino’s season opener is one that Monique feels motivated doing:

“It is not only the deepest honor, but the most profound duty, to be called to do what we can contribute to creative resistance and to the awakening of political and social consciousness through art and theater, and to keep forwarding the revolution we are still fighting against imperialists and colonizers today, in 2019. The war waging inside minds and hearts, as well as in the streets, inside congress and in the countrysides are still going on today; and we need radical, tranformative, provocative art, in all its forms, to keep fighting for dignity and freedom. I feel deeply honored to be on this glorious, powerful, creative, epic life transforming artistic political journey with fellow Filipino artists,” Monique proudly shares.

One of the most versatile Theater and Film actresses in the country today, Monique was last seen on the Tanghalang Pilipino stage in 1995, playing Maria Clara in the musical adaptation of Noli Me Tangere. Prior to Monique, the role of Apolinario Mabini was played by Delphine Buencamino (for which she won the Philstage Gawad Buhay award for Outstanding Female Performance in a Musical) in the original staging in 2015, while former TP Associate Artistic Director Liesl Batucan and actress Hazel Maranan, took over in the subsequent stagings. Aside from Millado as the director, award-winning playwright Dr. Nicanor Tiongson wrote Mabining Mandirigma, while Joed Balsamo created the music.

NEW SOUND, NEW MUSICAL DIRECTION

Ejay Yatco joins the fold as Musical Director. When asked what makes Mabining Mandirigma different from other musicals, he is quick to point out the interplay between the historical and the contemporary. “It takes a beloved piece of our history added with a modern twist to resound with Filipino audiences especially the youth,” he shares.

Despite being the fourth rerun, the material is still very relevant in light of the events of the world today. “One exciting thing you can expect is a new rap number – so, watch out for that.” Through modern elements such as steampunk music and fliptop rap, Mabining Madirigma tells the story of Apolinario Mabini in a heartfelt and imaginative way while keeping the spirit of what it means to be a true Filipino hero.

Mabining Mandirigma, a Steampunk Musical runs at the CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater) from August 16 until September 1, 2019. For ticket reservations, groups sales and special performances please contact Tanghalang Pilipino: 0999-8843821, 09156072275 or (02) 832-1125, local 1621.

Laundry Business: How to Guarantee Success

Laundromats have actually been in existence since the 1930s in the United States: a row of fully automated self-service machines where people brought their own detergent and waited for their laundry to finish. For the Philippines, laundromats actually only started becoming popular in the late 90s and these were full service in nature.

People came in and dropped off their laundry and picked them up at a later time already packed and folded. But a few years back, we started seeing the growth of self-service laundry shops and these have become so popular that you can now see one in every corner of the neighborhood.

The proven advantages of the laundry business consistently make this industry a solid business choice. Experts say that the combination of flexibility and high demand appeals to aspiring entrepreneurs since these factors raise the probability of success.

Besides this, it is also an advantage that laundry shops are recession-resistant as clean clothes are considered a basic necessity. Unlike other industries, the targeted customers are not restricted to certain age groups; everyone needs clean clothes so everyone is a potential customer.

As a cash business, there are minimized struggles with accounts receivables and low capital investments can even bring high rates of return. Where else do you have the possibility of earning back a one million investment in just 18 months? And where else can you operate a shop where your customers do their own work?

However, we must remember that success only comes with choosing the right equipment. Durability and dependability are a must before making decisions.

And with Whirlpool-Maytag Commercial Laundry, these are not just words but commitments to their partners and customers. This is why more than 1500 laundromats in the country have chosen the brand as their partner in the laundry industry.

Whirlpool-Maytag offers an extended line of commercial and industrial laundry equipment such as washers, dryers, and stackable units for you to select from that offer reliable performance and high-energy savings.

They are equipped with an Inverter Drive Technology that ensures energy efficiency and high extraction speeds which lessens the wear and tear on its components.

These models also have advanced software that tracks payments, wash cycles, and settings so both the customers and owners can relax without worrying about their security.

You can rely on Whirlpool-Maytag Commercial Laundry to work with you in determining the right solutions for your needs.

From equipment selection and installation, you’ll have the knowledge and experience of an industry leader behind you through the business seminars they offer nationwide.

You can profit from both our legendary reliability, and the ongoing support of the world’s #1 preferred laundry brand.

Filipinos trust Whirlpool-Maytag Commercial Laundry to make their lives easier and their businesses more profitable.

It's that trust in the Whirlpool-Maytag brand that has helped build customer loyalty year after year because you can guarantee that you have a brand that’s ready to support you every step of the way.

The laundry industry has a lot of untapped potential waiting to be discovered. Should you decide to start your own laundry business, Whirlpool-Maytag Commercial Laundry is ready to help you get started. "13th of September" Fund-Raising Show Set on Aug 13 to Sept 1

Be Our Guest Theatricals, in partnership with BGC Arts Center and Erehwon Center for the Arts, brings you the Fundraising Show of Eljay Castro Deldoc’s “13TH OF SEPTEMBER”: A reimagination of Lanie Robertson's "The Insanity of Mary Girard", directed by Riki Benedicto.
The play is the Philippines’ official entry to the 9th Festival International de Théâtre de Mont-Laurier in Quebec, Canada which will be held from September 5 -11, 2019. Only 25 companies from over 20 countries are selected to join and present their plays during the said biennial theater festival. The Philippines is the only country from Southeast Asia who was selected to join the festival since its launch in 2003.

Any play can, practically, be “based on true story” but “The Insanity of Mary Girard” is one of the few that took real-life events into a haunting and highly theatrical piece. Mary Girard (1758–1815) was committed to an asylum in 1790 where her husband declared her legally insane. During her confinement, she gave birth to a baby girl – unsure who the father was – who died five months later. After residing in the insanity ward for 25 years, she was laid to rest somewhere on hospital grounds, her grave unmarked.

SYNOPSIS
Sunday Evening, Mary Girard is preparing for her last night in Pennsylvania Asylum. Now, 56, her age is visible after more than two decades re-living the moments of her life inside the asylum. While doing her daily routine and preparation with other patients, her past is dawning inside her, the memories of her mother, husband and her dear daughter are right in front of her and it seems like she’s “sane” once again. As for her last night with the tranquilizing chair, she will fight and re-live the moments of lies and betrayal that has never been proven.

THE PLAYWRIGHT
After the launch of one of his notable pieces, “Lukot-Lukot, Bilog-Bilog” with Tanghalang Pilipino, ELJAY CASTRO DELDOC makes his debut in the international scene with “13th of September” together with his dramaturg, Drew Espenocilla. In this piece, they illustrate the “present-time Mary Girards” as victims of a harsh society whose leaders are oblivious to the horrendous truth – that the Philippines is living within a culture that emphasizes resilience and humor amid suffering and pain making it difficult to talk about mental illness where you have no other choice but to be strong – both mentally and emotionally. They regard that, as people, we put so much importance in being able to roll with the punches, almost to the point that it’s a requisite to master how to laugh in the face of misfortune. This is why, despite the growing call to recognize mental health as a legitimate public health concern, initiatives to resolve this remain limited.
Eljay has been a part of The Virgin Labfest for six consecutive years since 2013. His most notable plays are first staged in this festival: “Owel”, “Ang Goldfish ni Prof. Dimaandal”, “Si Maria Isabella at ang Guryon ng mga Tala”, and the Carlos Palanca Memorial Award-winning “Pilipinas Kong Mahal With All the Overcoat”.  In 2016, “Si Maria Isabella…” was mounted by Bindlestiff Studio in San Francisco, California. Recently, he ventured in producing teleplays as a part-time writer for GMA 7. He’s part of the writing team of “Juan Tamad”, “Naku Boss Ko”, “Conan My Beautician”, and “I Heart Davao”.

THE DIRECTOR
Director RIKI BENEDICTO has headed several productions with Tanghalang Pilipino, Cultural Center of the Philippines, Virgin Labfest and Dulaang Filipino. True to BOGT’s primary objective, he has been consistently elevating the presence of Philippine theater globally with his directorial works in Dulaang Filipino’s Out at Sea (7th Montreal International Theatre festival) and Oedipus (7th Festival international de Théâtre de Mont-Laurier). The latter was awarded Best International Performance and special Jury prize in Teatralny Koufar in Belarus, SETKANI/ENCOUNTER International Theater Festival’s SWAG Award in Brno Czech Republic and Best International Performance in Escenamateur Spain. Solomon also won as Best International Performance in Escenamateur Spain.
He received Best Director for a Musical and Best director for non-musical Nominations from ALIW awards in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
Riki is, once again, putting forward another universal concern in Eljay Castro Deldoc’s “13th of September” where he aspires to “challenge society’s restrictive definition of sanity, gender and sexuality or even your perception of truth - truth is relative.”

"Dancing Lessons" - A Play on Autism Opens Twin Bill Theater's 3rd Season on Aug 16

"People attend live theater because they “feel other people’s emotions, see the world
like they do.” --Senga Quinn

Are you in for a new romantic comedy play about two lonely souls who embark on an
unlikely relationship filled with surprising discoveries and the healing power of love?

Twin Bill Theater Company is all set to open its third season with the Asian premiere
of DANCING LESSONS, a 95-minute charming new two-character play by Mark

SYNOPSIS

DANCING LESSONS centers on Ever Montgomery, a science professor and Senga Quinn,

a serious injury that threatens her career and identity. When neighbor Ever, a professor

how to dance. She changes him in a way many would probably think is impossible.
