UMak Student Crowned Miss Makati 2019

An 18-year old student of the University of Makati (UMak), Micah Beatrice Santos from Barangay West Rembo, has been crowned Miss Makati 2019, besting 23 other candidates at the Coronation Night held Friday at the Makati Coliseum. Makati Mayor Abby Binay said the newly-crowned Miss Makati 2019 impressed the judges with her striking beauty, self-confidence and intelligence, which have made her an ideal partner of the city government in promoting a “smart, sustainable and future-ready Makati”. “Miss Makati 2019 has risen above the challenges she has faced and turned these into opportunities to grow and become a stronger and better person. I am confident that she will be able to fulfil her crucial role in accelerating Makati’s transformation as a Smart City,” Mayor Abby said. The mayor said Miss Makati 2019 will serve as the city’s ambassador of goodwill while inspiring fellow young Makatizens to strive for excellence and take an active part in city-building, as defined by the 2019 pageant theme, “Creating the Future Now”.

Santos is also the current titleholder of Miss UMak 2019. She stated that her advocacy is to campaign against bullying, having been a victim of bullies herself, and vowed to help fellow victims overcome adversity. Cruz, said that she was motivated to join the pageant by her personal experience with taking care of a family member suffering from dementia, her own grandmother. Aklan Representative Teodorico "Nonong" T Haresco, Jr, reaffirms his commitment to save and protect Boracay from environmental destruction and economic exploitation by stressing the FOUR POINT agenda he has committed to accomplish during his term, namely:

INFRASTRUCTURE

As a staunch supporter of the infrastructural change, Congressman Haresco vows never to unduly burden the island paradise with giant buildings nor endanger it with the construction of the Caticlan Bridge, but by seeking to improve its long overdue underground sewer system.

He promises to continually improve Boracay's underground sewerage system to prevent waste from the commercial establishments, hotels, and structures around the white sand beach from being siphoned off to sea, thereby preventing water pollution and the spread of dirt and disease to keep visitors safe.

LIVELIHOOD

Intertwined with Boracay's infrastructure development is the promotion of sustainable livelihood among its residents.Congressman Haresco plans to do this by further developing the agricultural school they have established on the island.

By encouraging the youth to learn and the women to engage in sustainable, organic farming technology and methodology, the island would soon become a self-sustaining, self-reliant producer of world-class organic goods not only for consumption but for profit.

EDUCATION

Closely linked to furthering education on the island, Congressman Haresco reaffirms, too, his promise not only to give local scholarships to agricultural students and residents, but also to open up scholarships to underprivileged but deserving people, so that they could study in the best universities.

He encourages residents from nearby provinces, and even enterprising individuals from the National Capital Region, to avail of these scholarships up to the post-graduate level, as long as they promise to register in Boracay where they can establish and grow their businesses to further the local economy.

HEALTH

Wrapping up his four-fold plan, Congressman Haresco, vows to make health care services as affordable and as accessible as possible through free public health care in hospitals and health centers to ensure that residents and visitors alike remain healthy and productive.

REP NONONG HARESCO SHARES FOUR-POINT PLAN FOR AKLAN

Representative Teodorico “Nonong” Haresco, a Lasallian alumnus who made his way up through his youthful entrepreneurial spirit, shares five-point plan for the Lone District of Aklan in a meet-and-greet with print and online media respresentaties at Dad’s West Avenue –

First, HEALTH. Not only because he has personally experienced not having enough money to undergo a much-needed gallstone operation, but also because he believes that Health is a priority for more productive citizens.

This he plans to do through what he calls “PANALO TAYO KAY HARESCO” medical cards which would provide members direct and free access to medical services even without the show money most health care facilities require before treatment.

Second, INFRASTRUCTURE. Congressman Haresco firmly believes that with infrastructure business would follow, paraphrasing the great Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping.

He, however, although against modernizing Boracay in the sense of altering the terrain of the world-famous beach resort with buildings and bridges,is all for upgrading healthcare, security, and business systems in the island paradise.

Third, WORK AND LIVELIHOOD. He does not only intend to get more Aklanons to get certified by TESDA to give them their passport to working here and overseas, Congressman Haresco also encourages more of his constituents, especially for women and youth,to engage in livelihood opportunities.

Fourth, EDUCATION. Congressman Haresco wishes to make both public and private education—not to mention, technical skills training through TESDA—accessible to majority of the Aklanons by offering them various scholarship programs.

Having observed that most of the budget for educational scholarships for his district only get returned to the National Treasury because very few are trying to apply, he’d like to incentivize learning so that children and youth have options on whether to work, apprentice with companies, or go to university for further studies.

Thus, the tagline: KAY HARESCO, PANALO TAYO SA KALUSUGAN, SA INFRASTRUKTURA, SA TRABAHO, AT SA EDUKASYON!
